THE CHALLENGE

SmartShape is a full-service design firm specializing in the development of creative design ideas and manufacturing know-how. The company was looking for a suitable partner to compliment its creative strengths with additional top-notch engineering capabilities.

In addition to providing Pro-Engineer services, SmartShape required their new partner to maintain a sensitivity to design intent. The ability to preserve design integrity during the conversion of SmartShape concepts into three-dimensional computer models was one of the company's main concerns. After working with a number of other organizations, Smart Shape looked to MAGNET for assistance.

THE APPROACH

The partnership began with Pro-Engineer support for a new line of houseware products. SmartShape needed MAGNET to develop three-dimensional models of each new product. MAGNET engineers transformed SmartShape's conceptual images into CAD models of each product, taking into account the manufacturing process. By maintaining sensitivity to SmartShape's design intent, MAGNET provided a smooth transition from designer to conversion with a very short lead-time. In the process, a new partnership was created which expanded SmartShape's finite resources and helped the company meet its objectives and critical deadlines.

Since the completion of this project, SmartShape has maintained a steady, growing reliance on MAGNET as a preferred partner. In just over a year, MAGNET and SmartShape have partnered on 15 projects, ranging from plastic houseware to high technology products.
