THE CHALLENGE

As the leader and innovator in precision crafted key ring tools, Swiss+Tech Products (Swiss+Tech) is continually exploring ways to create innovative new products with enhanced features and benefits, at a lower cost. In 2003, the company aimed to improve the aesthetics, and increase the functionality and manufacturability of its Micro-Plus tool by making several incremental changes in the product’s design. In addition, Swiss+Tech was considering integrating its popular Micro-Light into the product in an effort to enhance consumer appeal.

THE APPROACH

Swiss+Tech approached MAGNET to develop several updated aesthetic options for its patented Micro-Plus key ring tool. Using the existing product and the client’s “wish list”, MAGNET engineers conducted a brainstorming session to identify and then present several full-color concept renderings to the company. Based on feedback from Swiss+Tech, one concept rendering was finalized and delivered for the next generation Micro-Plus product. This initial design grew into two other line extensions featuring Swiss+Tech’s Micro-Light and Micro-Clock.

From these concepts, MAGNET engineers created Pro Engineer 3D files of all the components, including the Phillips #1 and #2 screwdrivers, flat #1 and #2 screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters,wire stripper, sheet shear, quarter-inch ruler, base docking station and micro-light clock docking stations. Swiss+Tech also was presented with 2D drawings of the components and an assembly drawing of the Micro-Pro line. All files were supplied to the company in multiple formats to provide universal interpretability. After completing this initial design phase, MAGNET engineers provided manufacturing design support as well.

The result was an enhanced key ring tool product line, the Swiss+Tech Micro-Pro TM Line, featuring the Micro-Pro XL with the Flashlight Docking Station and Micro-Pro XC that includes the Clock Docking Station feature.
