Cleveland—In its ongoing bidding war with a Canadian rival, Cliffs Natural Resources has offered $228 million to shareholders of Freewest Resources, a Canadian company that has discovered huge chrome deposits that Cliffs wants to mine.


Parker Hannifin sells hydraulic hybrid systems to Florida communities, by Robert Schoenberger, Cleveland Plain Dealer, December 11, 2009
Cleveland—Parker Hannifin Corp. has sold 11 of its hydraulic hybrid truck systems to Miami, Miami-Dade County and Hialeah in Florida. The communities plan to use the hybrid systems in garbage trucks.

Detroit—GM said Wednesday that James Campbell will now lead Chevrolet, the company’s largest and most important brand. Campbell replaces Brent Dewar, who will retire April 1.

Upper Sandusky, Ohio—Plant Manager Neale Yeomans said the layoffs are a result of the economic downturn. There are 200 employees left working in three shifts in anticipation of a future rebound in business.

Orrville, Ohio—J.M. Smucker Co. is closing its Uncrustables sandwich factory in West Fargo, N.D., at the end of April as part of previously announced plans to consolidate operations at another manufacturing plant in Scottsville, Ky.

Cleveland—Cliffs Natural Resources issued a press release addressed to Freewest Resources Canada's shareholders. Cliffs and Noront Resources are battling to takeover Freewest.

Cleveland—National Machining and Tooling Association, which says it is moving to Northeast Ohio, possibly as soon as next year. Jack Schron, CEO and owner of the Cleveland-based industrial supply company Jergens Inc. was instrumental in the move, and hopes to attract more manufacturing associations to the area.


AkzoNobel announces new line of branded paints, by Shaheen Samavati, Cleveland Plain Dealer, December 7, 2009
Strongsville, Ohio—AkzoNobel, which has its U.S. headquarters in Strongsville, said Monday that it has landed a deal to produce a line of Martha Stewart-branded paints for Home Depot. The company said its manufacturing facility in Huron is one of three that is producing the new paint.

Barberton, Ohio—B&W's Houston-based parent, McDermott International, will spin off its Ohio-based subsidiary in 2010. While the change should not have a major impact on B&W's Barberton and Copley operations, the corporate headquarters will move from Virginia to Charlotte, N.C.

Washington—CEO Sergio Marchionne, chief executive of Chrysler says the automaker's recovery will be gradual but the company is making progress following its speedy government-led bankruptcy.

Toledo—U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu, a recipient of the Nobel Prize in physics, said Friday the technology being developed in Toledo to convert biomatter as simple as yard waste into a clean alternative to traditional diesel fuel is likely to have broad-reaching effects on communities across the world.
