Barberton, Ohio—The Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group subsidiary of McDermott International Inc. signed a contract to design and construct scrubbers for two, 825-megawatt units at Detroit Edison Co.'s Monroe Power Plant in Monroe, Mich.

Toledo—First Solar Inc., a Toledo-born company that operates a solar panel plant in Perrysburg Township which employs about 1,000 workers, is looking to build a similar plant to be operating about 18 months from now. But the Tempe, Ariz., firm won't say where the factory will be built.

Defiance, Ohio—General Motors Co. announced that it will spend $115 million over the next three years to upgrade the Defiance Foundry to cast the new V8 engine block for its 2013 models. It is the company's second such announcement--in February it announced a $59 million investment in its Defiance factory.

Detroit—General Motors is to unveil a plan today to spend $890 million to upgrade five North American factories for the next generation of V8 engines. The plan includes $115 million for the GM plant in Defiance, southwest of Toledo.

Youngstown, Ohio—A Chinese company that makes wind turbines visited the Mahoning Valley on Thursday and Friday for a ''very exploratory look'' at the area, a Regional Chamber official said Friday. A representative of the company, which wasn't identified, looked at potential greenfield manufacturing sites throughout the valley.
