Holland, Mich.—Compact Power Inc., Holland's second advanced battery plant half-funded by $151 million from the stimulus, will manufacture batteries for the Chevrolet Volt. It is only a part of a $2.4 billion federal commitment to the fledgling industry, financed under the economic stimulus.

Massilon, Ohio—The snack maker has begun a 52,000-square-foot addition to its new facility on the 30-acre site at the Northeast Ohio Commerce Park. The expansion will result in an initial 31 new, full-time jobs with a payroll of $1 million.

Detroit—Ford Motor Co.'s Taurus and General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet Camaro helped U.S. automakers outperform imported vehicles for the first time since 1997 in J.D. Power & Associates' annual study of vehicle appeal.

Cleveland—The Holmes County chamber of commerce has listings for about 450 furniture companies, ranging in size from 5 – to – 25 employees. Holmes County is said to have the largest concentration of Amish in the world, and the area furniture business brings in close to $280 million each year.

Akron—The two companies call the alliance Generation mPower, named for B&W's mPower light reactor that it unveiled in June 2009. Each reactor will produce 125 megawatts of power, capable of supplying upward of 100,000 homes.

Cuyahoga Falls—GOJO is cutting back on production because customer demand for the company's skin care and hygiene products — which jumped amid the peak of the H1N1 (swine flu) pandemic — has slowed.

Detroit—General Motors Co. is guaranteeing the battery in its Chevrolet Volt electric car for eight years or 100,000 miles in an effort to inspire confidence in the new technology.

Washington—The Federal Reserve said today that output at the nation's mines and utilities rose in June, offsetting the loss of factory output. It was the fourth straight monthly increase for overall production.

Lordstown, Ohio—About 5,100 hourly workers began production on the Chevy Cruze on Monday as the plant’s 1,200 new workers joined the line with the addition of a third shift. The assembly plant now operates with three 10-hour shifts, and the fabrication plant is running eight-hour shifts.

Cleveland—Novelis, an aluminium rolling and recycling company that announced an office consolidation in February, said 62 of the company's 191 full-time employees accepted offers to transfer to Atlanta. An additional 70 will be laid off and 59 are not impacted by the move.

Cleveland—Eaton Corp., Shanghai Aviation Electric Co. and Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China have signed a letter of intent for Eaton to supply the cockpit panel assemblies and dimming control system for Commercial Aircraft's C919 aircraft program.

—Ford Motor Co. has picked a Grand Rapids, Michigan-based subsidiary of Korean battery maker LG Chem to supply battery packs for an electric version of the Ford Focus that will hit showrooms sometime next year.

Washington—President Barack Obama will travel to Holland, Mich., on Thursday for the groundbreaking of a Compact Power Inc. factory, which received $151 million from a federal stimulus program to open the $303 million plant. The factory is expected to manufacture lithium ion cells and employ about 450 people by 2013.

New York—The U.S. Department of Transportation has analyzed dozens of data recorders from Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles involved in accidents blamed on sudden acceleration and found that at the time of the crashes, throttles were wide open and the brakes were not engaged, people familiar with the findings said.

Camden, NJ—Campbell's biggest manufacturing complex, a 730-acre site in Napoleon, Ohio, which houses two plants, will help produce the new V8 drinks.


GM sends Volt on trip to show what it can do, AP via Toledo Blade, July 13, 2010
—Folks in Austin will be among the first consumers in the nation to be able to buy the 2011 Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid electric car when the vehicle goes on sale this year, General Motors Co. said. The car won't be available nationwide for at least two years.
