Tokyo—Toyota is recalling 412,000 passenger cars, mostly the Avalon model, in the U.S. for steering problems in which three accidents have been reported, the automaker said Thursday.

Lordstown, Ohio—Bob Parcell, manager of GM's Bowling Green, Ky., plant that makes the Chevrolet Corvette sports cars, as of Sunday will take the Lordstown top job from John Donahoe, 58, who has decided to retire effective Oct. 1 after 33 years with the automaker, the last five at Lordstown.

Youngstown, Ohio—What community leaders call a "safe roadmap" to doing business in China became official Tuesday, as a delegation of Chinese dignitaries from Shandong Province signed a memorandum of understanding with the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber that pledges cooperation and business development for both areas.

Youngstown, Ohio—U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan says his recent appointment to the U.S. House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee is already starting to pay off. Ryan announced Tuesday that the fiscal 2011 defense-spending bill includes $37.5 million for projects in the 17th District, $17.5 million of which is earmarked for research and development efforts in the Mahoning Valley.

Santa Monica, Calif.—Industry-wide, sales of light vehicles (including fleet) are expected to reach 1,041,543 units in July, up 6% from this time last year and nearly 5% from June on an unadjusted basis. This translates into a seasonally adjusted annual sales level of 11.8 million new cars.

Washington—Demand for durable goods dropped 1 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted $190.5 billion, the Commerce Department said today. It was the second straight monthly decline and the largest drop since August 2009.

Perkins Township, Ohio—Even if lawmakers decide to scrap Constellation, NASA still will need enhanced testing capabilities for future spacecraft. The center and area economic officials also are working to expand Plum Brook's clientele to include start-up commercial rocket-makers, satellite manufacturers and other paying customers.

Solon, Ohio—Bird said X-Com was founded in 1994 and makes radio frequency (RF) test equipment, deployable RF signal sources and military digital communications equipment, primarily sold to the U. S. Department of Defense and other government agencies.


GM to sell Volt electric car for $40,000, Bloomberg News via Toledo Blade, July 27, 2010
Detroit—Initially, the Volt will be sold this year in parts of Texas, New York, and California and in the District of Columbia. Next year, GM is to build 10,000 of the cars, which run on all-electric drive for 40 miles before a gasoline engine recharges the battery.

Toledo—The Ohio Tax Credit Authority has approved job-creation tax credits for an expanding Perrysburg glass firm (Owens-Brockway Glass Container Inc.) and a Cleveland firm (Ruralogic Inc) seeking to open domestic information technology centers to repatriate formerly outsourced work.

Amherst, Ohio—Food processor Pierre Foods Inc., which operates Clovervale Farms in Amherst, will add 452 jobs as part of a three-year expansion at the local facility. The company produces a variety of fully cooked frozen sandwiches, bakery items, pastas, fruit cups and peanut butter products for restaurants, grocery stores, vending machines, schools, the military, convenience stores and hospitals.

Toledo—The Brookings Institution report, called "Export Nation: How U.S. Metros Lead National Export Growth," says 15.8 percent of the four-county Toledo area's gross metropolitan product that is sent to other nations is eighth highest among large cities in the United States.

Toledo—Turning Point LLC is working with Toledo's Lockrey Manufacturing to build the machines, which will be outfitted with electronics from Pinnacle Technology Group Inc. of Toledo. Turning Point has received $500,000 from the Regional Growth Partnership and nearly $500,000 from the University of Toledo Innovation Enterprises program.
